Woman hospitalised after taking illegal abortion medication on St. Maarten

SATURDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2013

PHILIPSBURG–Police were called to St. Maarten Medical Center on Thursday, October 24, where a woman from the Dominican Republic had arrived via ambulance the night before, bleeding heavily and complaining of severe abdominal pains.

The woman was 17 to 18 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a premature baby that died shortly after birth. The police investigation showed that the woman had bought pills on the street in the Dominican Republic which she took to instigate an abortion.

The body of the baby was confiscated on orders of the Prosecutor, pending further investigation. The woman remained at the hospital for observation.

The police remind the public always to seek professional medical advice in such matters and never to buy any type of medication on the street.
