Removal of asbestos at school starts today

03 FEBRUARY 2017

ST. PETERS–The Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI announced on Thursday night that works will commence at Prins Willem-Alexander School today, Friday, in connection with construction of the new school.

The project has three phases. Phase one, the total construction of the school, consists of three stages: asbestos removal, demolition and construction. The works will be carried out by general contractor Designers Choice N.V. in collaboration with Asbestos Specialist BV from Curaçao and will be supervised by Independent Consulting Engineers (ICE) supported by engineering staff from Royal Haskoning-DHV from the Netherlands.

In preparation for stage one of the works, on Friday the school will be barred off and no longer accessible to the public. This also includes the pathway adjacent to the school, which connects Apricot Road with Cupper Drive, behind St. Maarten Academy Academic School.

The closure of the pathway will last until Friday, February 10. This will allow a safe distance of five metres, which is required while the asbestos-containing material is removed. The completion of phase one is expected by mid-August 2017.

After completion of stage one, stage two will commence, followed by the transition to stage three.

The Ministry is requesting the cooperation of the residents of St. Peters and surrounding areas during the execution of the works.
