President of St. Maarten parliament wants full disclosure of parliamentarians' assets

PHILIPSBURG–Full disclosure of assets and interests for Members of Parliament, similar to the disclosure for ministers, is an issue President of Parliament and Member of Parliament for the United People’s (UP) party Gracita Arrindell will champion in the new year.

Arrindell said at her end-of-year press conference held at Parliament House on Monday that this was a step for which she had been lobbying since serving as a member of the Island Council in 2003.

“You should disclose what you came in with and what you have when you leave office,” she explained, adding that it did not mean MPs could have acquired more assets during their tenure. The disclosure simply would be for transparency and good governance.

When asked whether she would prepare and submit the draft initiative law to bring about this disclosure by all MPs, Arrindell said she would discuss the idea with her colleagues first, to garner their support.

If such a law is presented to Parliament without consultation with fellow MPs it will be “DOA [dead on arrival – Ed.],” she said.
