St. Maarten switches from 599-code to 1-721 for international calls

St. Maarten – The TelEm Group is stepping up education to the public about the use of St. Maarten’s 1-721 area code, the company stated in a press release issued last night.

As of 5:00am last Friday all TelEm Group landline and mobile equipment was declared ready to handle calls using the new area code.

Friday signalled completion of final adjustments and configurations to TelCell mobile equipment. Landline and other voice configurations were completed in August.

The old 599 code has now been discontinued and will not work anymore.

During the coming weeks TelEm Group will remind people about the new area code, stating when and how to use it for both local and international calls. Messages are also being sent via SMS as well and via customer bills.

For local calls the seven digit phone number will do, but for international calls to St. Maarten users have to dial +1721 plus the number, or 1721 plus the number for countries that are part of the North American Numbering Plan.

TelEm advises mobile customers to store their St. Maarten mobile numbers in the following format: +1721 5xxxxxx.
