St. Maarten Union invited to a cost-of-living adjustment meeting on Ascension Day

SATURDAY, 04 MAY 2013

PHILIPSBURG–The Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) has been invited to a meeting with the advisory body for civil servants’ issues GOA to discuss the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 9, which is a public holiday.

WITU President Claire Elshot said Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams probably had overlooked the holiday when the date of the meeting was set. Elshot will try to see if the date can be rescheduled to a regular workday. The GOA is the consultative body where matters concerning civil servants and teachers are discussed.

The union had given government a deadline of April 30 to make a decision on the payment of the COLA for 2011 as frustration grew over the matter.

Elshot said the union also had been informed in the invitation letter that government had allocated an amount in the 2013 budget to pay 50 per cent of the COLA. This amount will be paid in a lump sum.

The union also was informed that conversations would have to continue regarding the future of the COLA payment. She said the letter had not indicated when the remaining 50 per cent would be paid. The union is hoping to receive this information when the meeting is held.
