Police Chief attends ACCP conference

30 May 2017

PHILIPSBURG–Police Chief Carl John attended the 32nd Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) annual meeting and Conference in Aruba, May 1-4. This event was attended by numerous Police Commissioners within the Caribbean region.

The ACCP mission is to be the regional organisation for promoting and facilitating collaboration and cooperation in the development and implementation of policing strategies, systems and procedures in the region; the professional and technical-skills development of police officers throughout the region; and proactive measures to prevent crime and improve police community relations.

The crime rate among the islands in the Caribbean, law enforcement and crime in general were discussed during the conference. According to police, a noticeable difference with crime committed on the island is that the intensity of violence used during these criminal offences has increased.

This is unfortunate, but the situation has the fullest attention of Chief John, who has ordered plans of action to be drafted on how to tackle and deal with this situation with cooperation and collaboration of external partners.

The Police Force continues to exchange information with other stakeholders and external partners with the intention of improving and enhancing these working relations and in doing so creating a safer St. Maarten.

As part of the crime prevention efforts the Police Force has been providing Robbery Awareness Trainings and presentations in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CEPTED). The police have also entered the schools introducing the Teen and Police Services Academy (TAPS) and Cops and Kids programmes.

Terrorism was also one of the topics on the programme that was discussed. Terrorism is a global threat and the exchange and sharing of information, mainly among the islands in the Caribbean, is definitely one of the most important means of combating this criminal act.

The ACCP 2017 Annual General Meeting and Conference was deemed very informative and successful.
